Polymerization is a continuous chemical reaction to link monomers to form large molecules. The reaction takes place in the presence of initiators and/or at elevated temperatures. The monomers are converted to polymer chains through an oligomeric stage. The length of the polymer chain depends on the conditions of reaction.
Not all initial material is converted to chains with increasing length. Chain length and particle size may be influenced by the nature of monomer, emulgator and initiator used, the shearing force produced by the agitator and temperature variation.

The Resin or Polymerization Plants offered by THERMOPAC is complete with a mixing container to produce pre-emulsions, an additional tank (when required) for mixing protective colloid solution and a container for the preparation and feeding of initiator solutions, an ascension pipe, condenser, a receptacle and a vacuum unit when required.

The dosage of monomers is controlled by metering pumps and mass flow meters. The advanced control philosophy ensures precise control over the feeding of monomer or initiator and that the reaction proceeds safely and produces best possible product.

Heating & Cooling:
The heating medium is hot water circulating through half coils welded onto the outside of the reaction vessel. Automatic control of the hot water generator ensures precise control of the reaction temperatures. Once the reaction starts by the application of heat, the process becomes exothermic, so that the reactor no longer needs to be heated. In some instances, depending on the reaction, the reactor may even need to be cooled. The vaporization of undesired monomers and their condensation in the coil cooler (condenser) results in additional cooling. Precise control over the film temperature prevents over-polymerization or discontinuation of the polymerization process due to excessive cooling.

Special Features:
•The radially and vertically operating agitator produces only little stress to the reaction mixture.
•Continuous speed regulation to suit the reaction condition and to influence chain length (particle size).
•Smooth finish (surface roughness less than 2 microns) of contact surfaces and working parts delays the formation of coating films which adversely affect heat transfer and product quality. Smoothness of surfaces makes cleaning easier.
•Closed cooling system provided for the reactor cover facilitates the rising monomer vapors to condense on the cover and run down the walls of the reactor as a thin stream and flush the walls clean.
